The excavations of 1991–2002 were designed to explore the history and development of the site throughout time with the sub-theme of studying the community’s changing relationship to the sea and in particular cross-Channel trade.

It quickly became evident that agricultural activities had denuded much of the interior of its stratigraphy but preservation immediately behind the rampart was excellent and it was here that the excavations concentrated.
